โ€œMe and my wife, Gabrielle Union, we are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and weโ€™re proud allies as well. We take our roles and responsibilities as parents very seriously.โ€ This was made known by former NBA star Dwyane Wade on February 11.

Wade opened up about Zaya’s journey on  Robin Roberts Good Morning America show.

He further detailed how he had to handle his own biases with having a transgender child, โ€œI knew early on that I had to check myself. Thatโ€™s what I knew. I knew early on that I had to ask myself questions. Iโ€™ve been a person in a locker room that has been a part of the conversation that has said the wrong phrases and the wrong words myself.”

The 38-year-old star continued, โ€œAs I got older and I watched my daughter grow, I had to go and look at myself in the mirror and say, โ€˜Who are you? What are you going to do if your child comes home and says, โ€œDad, Iโ€™m not a boy โ€ฆ Iโ€™m a trans girl.โ€ What are you going to do?โ€™ That was my moment of real.โ€

He added, โ€œShe is the one who sat down with us as a family and said, โ€˜Hey, I donโ€™t think Iโ€™m gay.โ€™ And she went down the list. โ€˜This is how I identify myself, this is my gender identity, I identify myself as a young lady. I think Iโ€™m a straight trans because I like boys.โ€™ So it was a process for us to sit down with our daughter and find out who she is and what she likes, and not put something on her.โ€
