A fatal accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Saturday morning, resulting in the death of one person. The accident involved a Mini Truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD), attributed to excessive speeding during a heavy downpour, according to a statement by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Mr. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed that the accident took place near the Unilag waterfront, heading towards the Iyana-Oworonshoki area. In a statement signed by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, it was revealed that three individuals were rescued at the scene.

LASTMA operatives responded promptly to the accident, ensuring that the injured received immediate attention. The deceased was removed by officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), while LASTMA worked quickly to clear the accident vehicles, facilitating the smooth flow of traffic on the bridge.

Despite ongoing efforts by the government to educate motorists about speed limits, many drivers continue to ignore the regulations outlined in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018. Mr. Giwa emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits, especially on major roads like the Third Mainland Bridge.

Mr. Giwa urged both commercial and private vehicle drivers to be vigilant and adhere to speed limits to prevent further tragedies. He reiterated that road safety is a shared responsibility and stressed the importance of cautious driving, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
