An estimated 700,000 children of school age are currently out of school in Ogun State, according to recent statistics released by the State Government. This alarming figure has sparked a series of initiatives aimed at tackling the growing number of out-of-school children in the region.

Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), highlighted these concerns during an appearance on Rockcity FM’s ‘Daybreak Show’ on Monday. Majekodunmi revealed that the government is actively participating in a World Bank program designed to mitigate this issue and improve the educational environment in public schools.

The collaboration with the World Bank is a key component of the state’s strategy to reduce the out-of-school rate. This partnership focuses on creating a more conducive atmosphere for learning by addressing several systemic challenges.

“The major problem facing the basic education sector in Ogun State is no longer classroom congestion but a shortage of teachers,” Majekodunmi explained. He noted that while only ten percent of public schools in the state still face congestion issues, the lack of adequate teaching staff remains a significant hurdle.

To combat the shortage of teachers, the Ogun State Government is implementing the Ogun Teach Scheme, a recruitment drive aimed at bolstering the number of qualified educators in public schools. Applicants who scored at least 54 percent during the final screening for the scheme will be recruited, with priority given to those who achieved scores of 80 percent or higher.

“All applicants who scored at least 54 percent during the final screening for the Ogun Teach Scheme will be recruited,” Majekodunmi assured. “For now, priority is being given to those who scored 80 percent and other high scorers.”

These measures underscore the state government’s commitment to improving educational access and quality. The collaboration with the World Bank and the focused recruitment of teachers are part of a broader effort to ensure that every child in Ogun State has the opportunity to receive a basic education.
