Students from various tertiary institutions in Ogun State have declared their intention to distance themselves from the nationwide protest against hunger and poor governance, scheduled to commence today. Under the banners of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), the student leaders expressed their reservations about participating in the protest, which is set to unfold across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory from August 1 to 10.
The protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, is organized in response to escalating economic hardship and governance issues in Nigeria. Despite acknowledging the protest’s cause, Ogun State students voiced significant concerns regarding the potential for the event to be hijacked by disruptive elements, leading to chaos and violence.
On Wednesday, students gathered in Abeokuta, the state capital, to stage a rally emphasizing their decision not to partake in the protest. National President of NAOSS, Thomas Kehinde, addressed the media, articulating the group’s stance and urging students to avoid any involvement in the protests.
“We, the leaders of the collective student structures in Ogun State, have organized this rally to firmly state that our student community will not participate in the planned nationwide protests,” Kehinde declared. “While we support the right to protest, we are concerned about the possibility of the event being derailed by hoodlums who might exploit the situation to incite violence, looting, and vandalism.”
Kehinde further highlighted that although the protest’s organizers have pledged a peaceful demonstration, such assurances are difficult to guarantee. “We must remain vigilant,” he warned. “The potential for unrest and escalation into violence is a serious concern. The painful memories of the EndSARS protests, which saw widespread destruction and alleged loss of life, are still fresh in our minds.”
The student leader emphasized that Ogun State’s student associations are committed to advocating for their members’ welfare through peaceful and constructive means. “Our responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of our students,” Kehinde said. “We urge all students to remain calm and place their trust in their leaders to address their needs without resorting to violence.”
The decision by Ogun State students underscores a broader debate on the role and impact of mass protests in Nigeria. As the nationwide protest gets underway, many are watching closely to see how various groups will navigate the balance between advocating for change and maintaining public order.
