The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed strong dismay and condemnation following the destruction of properties belonging to former Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle at his country home in Gusau. This incident occurred amidst a nationwide protest, which has escalated tensions and led to acts of violence and vandalism.

In a statement issued by the party’s publicity secretary, Mallam Yusuf Idris Gusau, and made available to newsmen in Gusau, the state capital, the APC highlighted the deliberate targeting and deployment of thugs allegedly associated with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The statement paints a grim picture of orchestrated attacks aimed at APC members and their properties.

“We observed that many PDP thugs were strategically deployed to attack, maim, and destroy personalities and properties of the APC,” Mallam Yusuf Idris Gusau stated emphatically. He detailed how, on the first day of the protest, the thugs made a concerted effort to attack former Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle’s personal residence. The intervention of security personnel was crucial in preventing further damage. “This indicated that, if allowed, the thugs who were most likely implementing the directives of their leaders would have razed down the minister’s house and property,” Gusau added.

The APC spokesperson also pointed out that this is not an isolated incident. He recalled that last year, the same thugs burgled Matawalle’s residence. Such recurring violence has heightened concerns within the party about the safety and security of their members and properties. In addition to the attack on Matawalle’s home, the residence of Senator Sahabi Yau in Kaura Namoda was also targeted, resulting in significant destruction of valuables.

“We have earlier forecast the possible hijacking of the protest by the hoodlums and other miscreants in the state which they actualized,” Gusau noted. He urged security agencies to provide necessary protection for APC members and other well-meaning citizens, emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order. “We wish to implore security agencies in the State to give our members and all well-meaning citizens the desired protection of lives and property,” he said.

The APC’s statement also included a call to action for youths to resist being manipulated by unscrupulous politicians. “We also want to call on our youths not to allow themselves to be used by bad politicians, especially as the nationwide protest is supposed to be peaceful and address concerns in the country,” Gusau advised.

Despite the unrest, the APC commended the swift response of security agencies in mitigating the situation and preventing further chaos. “We commend the proactiveness of the security agencies in the state for their quick intervention,” the statement concluded.

As the protests continue, the APC’s message underscores the need for peaceful demonstrations that respect life and property. The situation in Zamfara serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of political protests and the imperative for vigilance and protection against violence.

Let us strive for a society where political differences do not lead to violence and where the rights and properties of all citizens are respected.
